FLYING FISH PROMOTION

SECURITY

The write-up focuses on security for the Flying Fish event held at Tati River Lodge on 28 November 2014. According to Bardi (2011) states that in hospitality there is importance to provide a safe and secure environment to the guests. This is supported by Maslow's hierarchy of needs on safety and security needs (Pettinger, 2007). At this event to ensure security there were security guards.

In events different people can provide security ranging from steward and security guards (Bowdin,Allen,O’Toole,Harris and McDonnell,2012).Security guards responsibility are for protecting the premises, ensure performers perform well without disturbances(Australian Government ,2011). At the stage of delivery in which the learner was involved ensured that all clients’ tickets are checked before start of event as a way of providing safe security. This is supported by (McCool, 2012) that providing security is a way to ensure only allowed personnel access.

Further work by Bardi has shown that it is up to the organisation to either have contracted or in-house security. This was visible at this event as they used a contracted security.

This significantly affected the security at the event as within a few hours before close down unauthorised public bombarded the place. It was difficult for security to control the situation as they were only four security guards for the event and again the lodge. Hence there is need to ensure enough number of a well-trained security personnel is allocated to an event.

BARAKA LODGE- Christmas Party

LEADERSHIP

Leadership as defined by Sharma and Jain (2013) is a practice by which an individual inspires others to achieve set goals and lead a company in an effective and efficient manner. A good leader ensures there is team work and leads people well (Cottrell, 2010). At Baraka Lodge which hosted the Christmas party had the owner for the company on duty for the event.

During the planning process it was agreed on theme Caribbean island and it seemed the manager and decor company were content with it. On the day of the event the manager and décor company were not in agreement of what Carribean theme is. The manager wanted to use his powers to force the deor company do something totally different with the wrong interpretation of carribean theme. This brought the argument are leaders made or born? The argument was answered through behavioural theories that leaders are should show what they can do (Administrative professionals, 2009).The learner realised that the type of leadership was from a level of top to bottom approach.  Lewin’s Three Participatory Leadership Styles (1939) Autocratic supports the above statement. The leader makes decisions without consulting the subordinates (Nel, Dyk, Haasbroek, Schultz, Sono and Werner,2006). The whole process did not go well in terms of the setups as the event was running behind schedule (Sharma and Jain, 2013). Hence, why leaders should involve subordinates in decision making.

Ultimately the group achieved its outcome as per below photos. The clients were satisified. The learner applied her team working skills to ensure the event become a success. The learner recommends democratic approach leadership style in which the employees and top management all make contributions in decision making.

CRESTA MARANG WEDDING LUNCH

Empowerment

The writer focused on the impacts of empowering your employees in events in particular the wedding lunch held at Marang Hotel for 200pax. Pettinger (2007) has highlighted that empowerment is more of assigning that allows the workers to make decisions in the absence of the managers or presence of managers and make solutions to problems (Du Toit, Marais and Motlatla (2003).

It has been evident that empowered employees are usually satisfied and motivated(Jones,2002).Though Bowdin et al (2012) has alluded that theory X and Y of McGregor has argued that some elements called hygiene factors do not motivate workers like working conditions though managers can motivate their employees by empowering them. The workers at the event showed that they were much empowered to take decisions in the absence of the managers. For example taking lead in the planning process of how the set up for the wedding will be in round tables, centrepieces, and position of the walk-away aigle for the bride in the absence of the manager but had to wait for final approval from the manager. Further work by Pride, Hughes, Kapoor (2012), Du Toit, Marais and Motlatla (2003) supports this claim that empowered employees have a voice in the work they do and how they want to do it.

The event outcome was achieved, and the learner suggests that managers should empower employees on administrative work because it was evident that the employees could take lead in the setting up but not on the marketing process.

FAREWELL PARTY FOR TEACHER’S TRAINING

STAGING

The writer focuses on how staging which is concerned with bringing all the aspects of production from planning to implementation of the event for Teachers training farewell party held at Thokgamo Restaurant. Bowdin, Allen, O’Toole, Harris and McDonnell(2007) have identified factors of staging namely audience / guests and choice of venue.

Audience and guests: Further work by Bowdin et al (2007) emphasised on the positions of the entrants , exits and arrival times. The event had reserving methods for the VIP that is a VIP table and the rest of the audience . At this event, the guests arrived before the agreed time. This then affected the preparation as everything was done under pressure.

Choice of venue:  Allen (2009) has alluded that event planners need to make a careful selection of a venue before anything else, as the venue will give the visuals on how the set ups will be as it might affect the decorations. The event was held in a restaurant and the number booked ended up increasing. Hence the venue could not accommodate the new number.

Ultimately, the whole class achieved a successful outcome, but to improve the process, perhaps there was need to have a chairperson to help encourage communication of new numbers are shared out well in time so that the venue could suit the number increased and the setup, like making use of the terrace.
